Putting an RV or Temporary Storage on a Vacant Lot

Rules for placing an RV, camper, or temporary storage on vacant property in Grant Township, Clare County, Michigan.
property · township
Last verified: 2026-03-25

If you own a vacant lot in the township and want to park an RV, camper, or place a temporary storage unit on it, you cannot just drop it off and go. The township has rules about what is allowed, for how long, and under what conditions.

Steps to Follow

  1. Contact the Zoning Administrator. Call Dick Hassberger at (989) 588-9841 ext. 5 before you move anything onto the property. He will tell you what is permitted in your specific zoning district.
  2. Apply for a special zoning permit. Fill out the Zoning Permit for RVs/Temporary Storage. You will need to describe what you are placing, where on the lot it will sit, and how long it will be there.
  3. Meet the requirements. Common conditions include:
    • The RV or storage unit must be in good condition (no junk or deteriorating units)
    • It must be placed at least the minimum setback distance from property lines and roads
    • You cannot use an RV as a permanent residence on a vacant lot without proper septic, well, and electrical hookups
    • Temporary storage units may have a time limit (often 6-12 months)
  4. Keep the property maintained. Mow the grass, keep the area clean, and make sure your RV or storage unit does not become a blight issue.
  5. Renew or remove on time. If your permit has an expiration date, either renew it before it lapses or remove the unit.

Key Details

  • Living in an RV on vacant land is generally not allowed without meeting the same requirements as a permanent dwelling — septic system, well or water supply, and electrical service.
  • Storage containers (shipping containers, semi-trailers) may face additional restrictions depending on your zone.
  • No permit means enforcement. If you skip the permit, you risk a nuisance notice and fines.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming your own land means no rules apply. Zoning rules apply to all parcels regardless of ownership.
  • Leaving an RV year-round without a permit. Even seasonal use needs approval.
  • Using a storage unit as a living space. This is a code violation and a safety hazard.
