If you own wooded land in Clare County, you have access to a free professional forester through the Conservation District. Mike Dittenber is the District Forester, and his job is to help private landowners make good decisions about their trees and forests — at no cost.

What You Get

Mike provides free on-site evaluations covering:

  • Tree species identification and health assessment
  • Wildlife habitat improvement — what to plant, cut, or leave standing for deer, turkey, songbirds, and pollinators
  • Pest and disease management — identifying oak wilt, emerald ash borer, spongy moths, and other threats
  • Timber stand improvement — which trees to thin, which to keep, and when
  • Tree planting recommendations — species selection for your soil type and goals
  • Forest stewardship plans — written management plans for your property

How to Get Started

  1. Call (989) 539-6401 and ask for Mike Dittenber, or stop by the Conservation District office at 545 N. McEwan St. in Harrison.
  2. Describe your property and goals. Whether you want better deer habitat, timber income, fire protection, or just healthier woods, Mike can help.
  3. Schedule a site visit. Mike will walk your property with you and give specific recommendations based on what he sees.
  4. Get a written plan if you want one. Forest stewardship plans are useful for applying to cost-share programs and qualifying for tax benefits.

Connections to State and Federal Programs

Mike can connect you with programs that help pay for conservation work:

  • EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program): Federal cost-share for practices like tree planting, invasive species removal, and wildlife habitat improvements.
  • CSP (Conservation Stewardship Program): Payments for maintaining and improving existing conservation practices.
  • Qualified Forest Program: A Michigan property tax program that reduces taxes on managed forestland. See our separate guide for details.

Key Details

  • Cost: Free. The District Forester position is funded to serve private landowners.
  • Property size: No minimum. Mike helps owners of 5 acres and 500 acres alike.
  • Timeline: Site visits are typically scheduled within a few weeks of your call.
