Michigan law requires all dogs over four months old to be licensed. It is not optional — it is the law, and it helps reunite lost dogs with their owners. Licenses are handled through the Clare County Treasurer's Office.
| Type | On Time | Late (after June 1) |

Unsanctioned (unlicensed) dog fine: Up to $70 plus the license fee.
Licenses run from January 1 through December 31 each year. You can renew starting in December for the following year. After June 1, late fees apply automatically.
If your dog goes missing or you find a stray, contact Animal Control Officer Bob Dodson at (989) 539-3221. The dog license tag is the fastest way for animal control to identify a dog and contact its owner.
The Clare County Animal Shelter holds strays and works to reunite pets with owners. Check with them if your dog is lost — and make sure that license tag is on the collar.
